The International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women was the scenario chosen by the Working Group on Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination to start its public activities after its creation last June during the virtual Board of Directors meeting of our organization.
Modifications to the updated site were presented at the genero.olacefs.com event where, in addition to consolidating all the work on gender issues carried out by the OLACEFS in recent years, it will also host the activities of the GTG.
To commemorate November 25 and with more than 400 spectators, the webinar began with the words of Minister Diana Marcos, from the Court of Accounts of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, who gave an account of the OLACEFS trajectory on gender issues and the process that, today, finds us before a new working group. Next, the Chilean academic from the University of Concepción, Cecilia Pérez Díaz, gave a presentation that, calling on States to break inertia, allowed us to visualize the vicious cycle of gender violence and the way in which the assignment of roles defines stereotypes imposed on girls from birth that, in the long run, lead to discrimination and whose final result is violence. The Regional Director of UN Women for Latin America and the Caribbean, María-Noel Vaeza, also gave a speech presenting the standards of the Organization she leads in the region to combat gender-based violence and the role that governments play in this fight, as well as the control entities, showing the heartbreaking numbers of violence in our region.
