With the participation of audit teams from 12 Supreme Audit Institutions and 2 Subnational Institutions of OLACEFS, the Virtual Consolidation Workshop on the Results of the Coordinated Audit on the Governance Structures for the Comprehensive Management of the Mining Environmental Liabilities (CA MEL), led by the SAI of Chile and carried out by OLACEFS’ Public Works Audit Working Group (GTOP).

The meeting -in its opening session- was attended by the Comptroller General of the Republic of Chile and President of OLACEFS’ Public Works Audit Working Group, Jorge Bermúdez Soto, in addition to the attendance of Aránzazu Guillán Montero, Senior Officer of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), who, together with the coordinating and technical team of the Coordinated Audit, introduced the delegates of each participating country to a common vision on the problems that affect the continent in terms of environmental liabilities and the importance of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals for supreme auditing.

The Workshop sessions allowed the auditors to present the main findings of their national audits, as well as to share experiences to promote improvements in the management of MELs in their countries, and the attention that each State gives to this environmental problem, incorporating the 2030 Agenda as a central theme.

On Friday, April 30, the closing session was held where, together with the President of the GTOP, Comptroller Jorge Bermúdez, there were also members present from the INTOSAI Extractive Industries Audit Working Group (WGEI), Dr. Grace Lushinga Chanda, Deputy Director of the Office of the Auditor General of Zambia and the Chief Auditor, Mr. Charles Chiwele. Also, participating in the closing session was Dr. Vivi Niemenmaa, General Secretariat of the INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) and Deputy Director of Sustainable Development of the National Audit Office of Finland.

On this enlightening day, we have the attendance of Sharon Clark, Vice President of the Canadian Auditing and Accountability Foundation for Professional Development (CAAF); We also heard the words of Mr. Erwin Ramírez, Director of the Project for Strengthening External Control of the Environmental Area of GIZ and the speech of Loreto Valenzuela, Head of the Department of Environment, Public Works and Companies of the SAI of Chile.

We thank the officials of the SAIs who accompanied us in the opening and closing sessions of the Workshop. We still have a long way to go with this project to disseminate the results of this work, which will surely contribute to enriching all the countries in the region in terms of environmental liabilities.
